At New Lattitude Sportfishing, our specialty is big game fishing. Sharks, sailfish and swordfish are our targets and this is the time of they year when the biggest fish of the year are caught. December and January are hands down the best time to go after sailfish. With the cooler weather, roaming cold fronts and strong east winds, it makes for great sailfish conditions. Sails love the colder temperatures and any cold front where the temp drops a few degrees will get the sailfish active and frisky. For sailfish, you can catch them 2 ways... kite fishing or sailfishing. Kite fishing is ideal form of live baiting for sailfish where we suspend live goggle eyes and/or mullet from kites, which keeps them right on the top of the water. When that sailfish comes up on your kite bait and sticks that hair-doo out of the water, you know you're in for a show. Sailfish spend most of the fight jumping out of the water, trying to shake the hook. It's a spectacle to catch a sailfish. If you've never caught a sailfish, it needs to be on your bucketlist because it's the most fun you can possibly have with your clothes on.

Shark fishing starts getting good this time of year as well. Every year, hundreds of big game anglers come down to go after the biggest of the hundreds of thousands of sharks that migrate down the south Florida coast. The big migration happens from late December to late May but there are often many big ones that show up early or hang out late, outside the main season. Sharks are the biggest fish to catch out here in Fort Lauderdale. We get hammerhead sharks from 6-10 feet regularly and some even bigger. This time of year we get some of the more exotic sharks such as mako, thresher and tiger sharks. Some really big sharks have been caught this week. If you're looking to catch something bigger than you are and the biggest fish of your life, charter us for a shark fishing charter. Eat some energy food before the trip, sharks take a lot of muscle to land.

All in all, December and January are some of the best months of the year for our area's biggest gamefish. Our charters specialize in going after big game and all our charters are customized to go after whatever is your quarry. This week has been exceptionally good for sailfish and sharks, so the big game fishing season is fully underway. Good luck to everyone fishing this week offshore of Ft Lauderdale. Tight Lines!
