Lots of Action Offshore

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is our first report of 2017 and all of you are probably wondering why I didn't do a report since the 20th of December. Well, we were really busy during the holiday season and most days we fished 2 trips each day. Being on the boat on every day to help my customers catch fish makes it hard for me write a report.

As usual, we had many repeat customers and we've gained new ones as well. It's hard to beat the good times spent on the water with people on vacation - everybody is happy when you're going out saltwater fishing.

Just to tell you a little bit about our last 3 weeks of fishing I had to go look at my log book and see what we caught and also looking at pictures to refresh my memory. I have to say we caught a good amount in the mackerel family - like kingfish in the 20 to 30 lb. range - all caught on live goggle eyes. I also like to mention that in the winter months we do have a lot of cero mackerel and Spanish mackerel - so for that reason we also like to have pilchards in our live well. On days when the offshore bite is slow, we like to go very shallow almost to the beach and on some trips those pilchard saved the trip and we ended up catching some Spanish mackerel 8 to 9 lb. - which is big for Spanish mackerel. To make it more fun, we like to use light tackle. We also caught numerous cero mackerel on pilchards and also caught some decent kingfish. Overall we had very good success. We had people who were trying saltwater for their first time and ended up catching numerous kingfish and their first sailfish. So when you've done that, there's a good chance they'll be back in the future.

We also tried bottom fishing a little bit and caught a few mutton snapper, some big yellowtail and yellow jack. One day after the new year, the weather was very nice with no wind and no current and fishing on the reef was very, very slow - nothing was biting. The offshore report was not any better, but still decided to go look and I'm happy we did because we ended up catching 15 good size skipjack tuna, 2 small mahi and 4 small blackfin tuna.

We've seen a good amount of sailfish, some wahoo, some small tuna and a good variety of mackerel.

Until next time, good luck and tight lines!
