Lots of Big, Interesting Fish Biting on Our Fishing Trips

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's a great month to fish the waters of Fort Lauderdale. Just about everything we can catch here in south Florida is biting this month. The cooler temperatures are getting the fish that don't bite that often, to get frisky and more aggressive. Sailfish, one of our biggest gamefish that we catch fishing in south Florida, are biting great this month. From November through February, all our cool temperature months, sailfish bite extra good for us. One technique that we do for sailfish, kite fishing, works incredibly well during this season of the the year. With stronger and steadier winds than normal, kite fishing is very conducive to targeting sailfish and other surface feeding gamefish. Kingfish, tuna, mahi-mahi and sharks are other big game fish that we commonly catch while kite fishing. The live baits, when presented using the kites, keeps the baits right on the surface of the water, putting off fish-in-distress signals, which are like ringing the dinner bell for all the big game fish in the area. And our fishing grounds, concentrated in the 100-200ft water column, which is just a quarter mile width track of water, makes kite fishing the perfect way to get the fish migrating along on the edge of the Gulfstream current. I love fishing the winter months in Fort Lauderdale.

Bottom fishing is good too. Big amberjacks, grouper, cobia, sharks, barracuda and sometimes big snappers are all species that we catch fishing the bottom. Some days we fish the bottom along the reefs and some days we target the deep or shallow shipwrecks. Some days we use live baits and some days we will drop multi-hook chicken rigs or long leader single baits. It's all a matter of conditions and what we are targeting. But bottom fishing during November and December is top notch. We have 1 month left for this year's grouper season. On Jan 1, there is a 4 month closure on groupers, so gotta get out there and get them while you can. Last few years in a row, the grouper bite has been off-the-scale for the big black and gag groupers. I hope this year follows suit. We will see soon and the early indications all look good to me.

Good luck to everyone fishing this month. Enjoy the beautiful south Florida weather and come out for some awesome deep sea fishing. I'll sea ya on the water.
