Mahi Proved Scarce, Kingfish Saves the Day

Capt. Mario Cote
July 11, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Yesterday, we fished with Perry, Jake and Alexis of Arizona (very nice people). Their primary request was to catch mahi-mahi (dolphin or dorado). So before leaving the inlet, we bought we 4 dozen pilchards and half a dozen goggle eyes. With the sea from 2 'to 3', we started our run offshore. After running for about 10 miles, still no weed or no birds, so we kept going. We ran for another 25 miles with the same results: no weed, no debris, no birds - no mahi. Disappointed with the lack of anything we turned around and headed back to the edge.

On our way back, Jake gives me the news that he's never caught a fish! We stopped in in 150' and put out goggle eyes deep and one goggle eye on a flat line. It didn't take long for Jake to hook and catch his first fish - 26 lbs. kingfish that hit one of the weighted line goggle eyes. The other deep bait also garnered a nice hit, but we missed that fish. Later, Alexis caught a 14 lbs. bonito on the flat line.

After a round of high-fives and some pictures, we came back in and Jake was a very proud angler with is first fish!
