Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

December fishing is in full swing and the mahi-mahi are biting great. December is generally a good month where a lot of mahi-mahi travel through our waters. In Fort Lauderdale, the Gulfstream current comes in really close to shore. On certain days, the strong, warm water currents of the Gulfstream are only 1 mile offshore. The fish use this current to carry them northward at a quick, constant clip. It makes for a very efficient way for fish to migrate through nutrient-rich waters in search of food.

December is a month where fish are on the move. Dolphin are constantly coming through our territory on their way northward. This time of year, they have broken away from the huge schools and have paired off in smaller numbers, like groups of 2-4 fish. They are also usually larger this time of than the summer, when they are schooled up in big numbers. Average size mahi-mahi is 10-12 pounders in the winter months, sometimes even bigger. The next 3-4 weeks will be the best mahi-mahi fishing that we will see until late March.

Sailfish are the other main attraction this month. Sailfish absolutely LOVE the chilly weather. Over the next few days, we have some chilly, windy weather coming through. These is PRIME conditions to go after sailfish. I don't know that it is about cold weather that gets sailfish so frisky. I guess it's like wolves and full moon, they just dig it. Sailfish are the most active when it gets cold. In Florida, it never gets really cold, but rather just cold enough. The cold snap we will have over the next few days will really tell the tale, so get ready!

Good luck to everyone fishing out there this week. I'll sea ya on the water!
