Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Thursday and Friday of last week, fished out of Fort Lauderdale and targeted mahi. Conditions were favorable with a good amount of weed from 100' to 800'. Like always, we were prepared with a good size load of live pilchards and goggle eyes.
On Thursday, we spend most of our time on the reef, with our top- and mid-baits producing bonito and kingfish ranging from 10 to 25 lbs. Friday, we fished with Billy and Pierre and they asked me to target mahi. We headed north by the Steeple and started on the reef in 150', and then, ventured into deeper water slowly, looking for mahi under numerous patches of weed.
In 500', we started to see some action – a sailfish free jumping and a frigate bird moving fast through the area. We immediately put out a live goggle eye and pilchard on flat lines and maneuvered the baits under the frigate. Within moments, a 20 lb. mahi took the pilchard and the fight was on for Billy. After a successful battle, we took some pictures and kept looking for more fish. We managed to catch a few more nice ones and lots of small ones for Pierre and Billy.
On Sunday and Monday we decided to do some bottom fishing, and Sunday was definitely our best day. We had 5 mutton snapper up to 14 lbs., some nice grouper up to 20 lbs. that we released unharmed and ready to fight another day!
