Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The shark fishing in Fort Lauderdale is incredible this month. Hundreds of thousands of trophy sized hammerhead sharks are swimming down the inside edge of the Gulfstream this month. They are between 7-10 feet long and anywhere from 200-600 pounds. These monster sharks are awesome fighters. Anglers do battle with these huge gamefish for 1-2 hours on our heaviest tackle (Penn 130W Internationals) to land these beasts. You can catch them fishing top or bottom baits. Usually a 10-20 pound bonito will work well as bait or else an oily kingfish will do the trick. You still have to put in some time. Some days the shark will take the bait the instant you drop it in the water, and some days you have to wait 2-3 hours to get the bite. But this time of year has such an overabundance of monster sharks, eventually you WILL get the bite.

Hammerheads are making their way down our coast this month, but in the next couple months, we'll have the migration of all the other species of sharks that swim off our coast. Dusky sharks, bulls, tigers, mako, thresher and sand bar sharks will all be biting in June. And then in July we get the spinner sharks come through. The spinners come through in huge numbers and they are catchable on lighter tackle, and they jump!! Spinner sharks are aptly named because they are one of the few sharks that jump out of the water and they have a unique trait in that when they jump, they spin sometimes 2-4 complete revolutions before they fall back into the water. This spinning maneuver that they do often snaps the line, so it's important to have extremely heavy leader material. Hammerheads are coming through now though and they are the king of the sharks in south Florida. If you'd like to catch a sea monster, these next few months are the time to come fishing. We specialize in big game fishing for sharks and swordfish. Come out on a fishing charter and catch a gamefish bigger than you are!
