Monster Sharks Biting this Week out of Ft Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

February is here and that means the shark bite is on! Every year from February through May, we have a big migration of sharks that swim down the coast. They are a mix of hammerheads, mako, thresher, bull, dusky, nurse, tiger and more. There are literally, hundreds of thousands of sharks that swim northward up the coastline, right along the inside edge of the Gulfstream current. The inside edge of the Gulfstream is not only a current edge, but there is a very subtle temperature break there too. It's just a fraction of a degree, but that tiny difference in temperature is the beacon line that the sharks use to navigate. It's just a mile and half offshore, in about 300-400 ft of water and it's where we catch a lot of the largest gamefish we have off the Florida coast.

This week, we've caught some big hammerhead sharks, a mako shark which is very rare for our waters and just yesterday we caught a humongous, over 300 pound nurse shark. February is the first month of the shark migration so they are just getting started. It gets better and better as we get into March and April and probably peaks in May. We still catch sharks all summer long here in south Florida, but nowhere near the numbers and sizes we catch in the late winter/spring months. While the fall and early winter months is sailfish and swordfish season, late winter, spring and summer is our shark season. At New Lattitude Sportfishing, we specialize in shark fishing charters. Anglers come from around the world to fish with us on our special shark fishing charters and many of them end up catching the largest fish of their lives.

Sharks are the largest gamefish in the ocean and are considered to be apex predators. They are the only family of fish without any natural predators. In fact the only predator they have is the crew of the New Lattitude Sportfishing charterboat! If you're looking for big, and I mean big, then you want to come out on a shark fishing charter with us. Good luck everybody and I'll sea ya on the water!
