Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
It's was nice to get back on the water this week. Monday morning we had 3 kids fishing with us. As usual we loaded up on live pilchards before leaving the inlet. We started fishing for the day on the reef in 125', but with no current and dead low tide, I knew conditions weren't in our favor. In the first 2 hours we managed to catch only 1 kingfish and a remora. With 3 kids on the boat, I needed to do something and increase the action to retain their interest. I decided to move in deeper water, and in 850' we saw a nice rip and a few birds. It was a good call because we spent the last few hours of the trip were full of action - catching about 30 mahi on small jigs. The kids had a blast and are now hooked on fishing for life!
On Tuesday morning, we fished with some kids again. And again, we started the day on the reef with our live pilchards in search of some action, but this time we could not buy a bite. So again, we went deep hoping to find some mahi. We succeeded again finding some under a small log in 700' but this time they were all undersize. Although they were not keepers, the kids managed to catch 15 and they had a BLAST!
On Wednesday, we fished with 3 guys from the Canadian army and this time we had perfect conditions on the reef - a north current and the last few hours of the outgoing tide. So, we started making drifts right up in front, by the whistle buoy, in 150'. On our first drift, we managed to catch 4 bonito. Our next drift produced 3 nice kingfish up to 16 lbs. and we finished the morning with a nice amberjack and a nice jack crevalle - all caught on live pilchards!
