Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Quick report about the great night anchor fishing we're having out there lately. Our night anchor trips are catching a lot of snappers. It's a mix of mangrove snappers, yellowtails and a few mutton snappers. Groupers are biting too but are all catch and release for a few more days. Of course we are also catching a lot of the usual suspects as well... grunts, porgies, triggers, jacks and even some bluefish. Out of all the trips that we run on our drift fishing boat, the night anchor trips are producing the best catches with the most fish. The day trips do have the advantage in catching the bigger fish (kingfish, tuna, cobia, etc.) but the night trips are the most fun because we get a lot of action.
Our most successful trips lately have been fishing the 40-60ft reefs. We anchor up and chum heavily with glass minnows and ground menhaden chum. This creates a large chum slick behind the boat which draws the snappers in from a great distance. At night, snappers are out and about, looking for food. They are on the hunt, so if they get a whiff of our chum, they hone right in on it. The object is to get the fish beneath the boat, looking for whatever is putting off the fish smell. With a little current and a little luck, it works like a charm. Good luck to everyone fishing over the next few nights. I'll sea ya on the water.
