Port Everglades - Light Tackle Offshore Fishing

Capt. Mario Cote
August 28, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

I recently returned from a 2 week vacation and did an afternoon charter on the day I returned. We didn't know what was biting, or not, on the reef so we headed offshore. Chelsea and Jessica from Miami and Chad from Hollywood where so happy I was going offshore they all started chanted mahi, mahi, mahi.

After running to 700' and no blue water, I stopped. Chelsea came to me and said every time we go with my dad we never catch anything! So, I began wondering if I made the right call! Well, we kept going offshore, and in 1000', we found the blue water directly east of Port Everglades.

Upon our arrival, the area was full of birds and I knew we were going to see some action soon. I told the crew to be ready, and in no time, Chelsea , Jessica and Chad had caught 12 to 15 nice size skipjack tuna on small spinning outfits with feathers. Everybody was very excited and happy!

On our way back in, we saw some bird activity in 300' in front of Hillsboro Inlet. We worked and the area and it produced a few mahi, a few blackfin tuna and 15 bonitos. Everything we caught was on small spinning rods outfitted with trolling feathers. Everyone had a great day of light tackle fishing fun.
