Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the Pompano Beach area.
If I can choose a day to fish during the winter season, it would be when the winds blow from the east. Today I took out Sue Cocking from the Miami herald to show her what is biting in Ft. Lauderdale. We went to the steeple area about 6 miles north of the port. Winds were inconsistent ranging from 15-20 knots and then times when the kite took a drink.
From the kite baits we caught Kingfish, and our flat lines produced the rest of the fish for the day. We came up with 2 Dolphin up to 6 pounds, 1 Sailfish, we thought we had him at boat side after 5 minutes but then he must of seen the boat because he took off at least 300 yards of 20 pound line and didn’t come back for 45 minutes.
We had a mystery fish which hit the 12 pound set-up with a Pilchard and spooled us for about 200 yards before the hook pulled, probably a big Kingfish or a Sail. In the deep, near 300 feet there was a lot of bird action, we heard from nearby boats it could have been pods of Sails moving through. All our bites were inside of 200 feet.
The Sail fishing continues to be consistent, and should last through April, May.
Till next tide,Captain Cary Hanna
