Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
May 26, 2003
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fresh start

In between fishing days I have made time to install some new electronics. We now have updated to Raymarines RL70CRC 7 inch color display unit with a RAYNAV 300 digital gps and a DSM250 digital sounder module. These 3 units make fishing another new ball game. The color display unit contains 3 variations, a radar unit, a chartplotter and a sonar/ fishfinder all in one, accompanied by a 1000 watt transducer that shows more detail than ever with the new DSM250. This unit enhances bottom definition and reduces surface clutter. The DSM250 has twice the ping rate of it's competitors, resulting in the best clarity.

The charplotter can store up to 999 different waypoints plus the MOB position. I took most of the Memorial day to store the numbers for all the wrecks and inlets from Boca to Government cut, Swordfish pockets from Miami to Hillsborough and all the local fishing holes out of the Port Everglades inlet.

If you can be a little flexible on your fishing days you can find a great window to fish in. Lately we have been going through some serious weather that has been unpredictable from one day to the next. This past weekend was nice if you got out for the early morning bite, the rain storms didn't show up until after 3:00pm. The reef has been producing well during the hours of good weather. The window has been at least till noon or so before the low pressure sets in and the rain falls, then the bite slows down quite a bit. You can expect to catch Blackfin Tuna ranging from 15 to 35 pounds if your one of the fortunate ones to find them, Kingfish are still biting and the wrecks are still producing some big fish. If you want to target a nice Hammerhead we got the gear. Sailfishing has been a bit quiet, with not as many numbers as last month. The Dolphin are starting to move in better numbers in the 300 to 500 foot range. Come and book a days fishing, we start by checking the wrecks for some rod bending action then drift the reef to look for Tuna, Kings, and Sailfish, then we do some trolling for Dolphin in the cobalt blue waters.

Till next Tide,

Captain Cary Hanna
