Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
A change in conditions
It seems as the weather stabalizes a bit the fishing improves. Last week there was not alot of storms so the barometric pressure was high. We fished with a few local residents from Plantation, FL on Thursday and got a chance at some Sailfish up north of the Port around the steeple area. The current was ripping north and we ended up 6 miles north from our starting position. I don't mind spending a little exta gas money to get to where the fish are biting. The Bonita are still everywhere and put up a strong fight, they will teach you how to fight a fish. On Friday we were greeted by a storm surprisingly since the weather has been great, it was short lived as we headed south 4 miles to get away from it. The rest of the day was great. On our first drift we found a Dolphin hitting the flatline Pilchard and he jumped himself off. Within a few seconds he hit another rod and this time we were on. As he neared the boat another Dolphin swam close by, I put down the gaff and ran for the spinner, baited it with a Pilchard, and tossed it out near the other Dolphin. I kept the bail open and waited for the line to strip off, it did and I tightened down and we were having a double header, a 15 and a 10 pounder in the box. It was great as I heard the guys 10-15 miles offshore catching schoolies in the 2 -5 pound class. Next we had more Bonita action off the kite rig, as we closed in to noon time the Kingfish showed up. We winded up with 2 keepers 14 and 16 pounds each. We missed 4 fish but it takes just a little practice to get used to fighting a game fish. Once you get the hang of it you rarely miss.
Swordfishing is coming up this week and next. We will be joining a few sponsors in a televised shoot on Swordfishing on our boat this week as we search for the big one. Got the itch, we got the solution.
