Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Smoker Kings, Blackfin and Sailfish
This report is for Friday July 4. I had encouraged my fishing crew today to get an early start. I knew the waterways would fill up quickly with about everyone who had a boat. So we arrrived at the dock before 6 am, and purchased 3 dozen baits. We headed as far as possible from the inlet and soaked a nice spread of live bait. The action was non stop from there on. All of our bites came on top of the water column with our biggest catch a 30 pound smoker Kingfish. Its been a few months since I had seen a smoker of this size. When it came to the boat I actually thought it was a shark it was so big. There was alot more Kingfish caught and to top it off we found a hefty Blackfin Tuna mixed in with all the Bonita.
I had another first happen on my boat today, we had a nice Kingfish come boatside and do his usuall 'see the boat and take off as fast as he can' and as he was about 30 yards from the boat large porpoises surfaced and were going nuts jumping all around our fish. My client Darius couldn't get any cranks on the reel for a few moments and then finally cranked in the head of what was a decent 15-20 pound Kingfish. I have never seen porpoises attack a hooked fish, its a fish eat fish world. We had to dodge a few storms and winded up getting thoroughly soaked, but it was worth the wait to get back in the action. We had a nice run from a Sail that stripped about 300 yards of line off the reel in the middle of one storm. We had a great time fighting 3 fish at one time in the middle of another short lived storm, we could hardly see with the wind and rain blowing over 20 knots, but it was great chaos. Fish were grabbing baits as we were letting them out. At the end of our trip we had only one bait left that never got hit.
Till next tide,
Captain Cary Hanna
