Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Dolphin and Sailfish everyday

If you have been keeping up with my reports, a few weeks ago I wrote about fishing in the Swordlords tournament. We were about 16 miles offshore in front of Ft. Lauderdale when we found a wooden pellet with tons of bait under it and scored a 25 pound Bull Dolphin on a large Blue runner and caught numerous other Dolphin. Well this past Friday we were finishing up our fishing trip about 4 in the afternoon at the whistle bouy when 2 guys come over to us in thier boat and were all excited telling us to follow them about 1/2 mile offshore to a floating palletcthat was loaded with fish, they had no fishing rods and were just joy riding. So we picked up and followed them and started pitching baits, I took another large Blue runner and sent him on his way. He swam staight down heading for the pallet. Next thing I saw was this slob of a Bull Dolphin jumping airborn right next to our boat with my Blue runner in his mouth and all the other schoolie Dolphin following him. It didn't take him long to eat and we had us a fight with a 40 pound Bull Dolphin. The rest was chaotic as we fed the schoolies finger mullet that we netted earlier in the morning. We ended up with 4 schoolies and the Bull. Then they disapeared and never came back. All this was in 140 feet of water.

Earlier in the day we were catching Barracudas and Sailfish in the 350 foot range. We brought one boatside for a picture and we had a double header that we pulled the hooks on both. An awsome day with seas at 1 foot or less and southeast winds less than 5 mph. Today, Sunday, we fished in 5-7 foot seas with occasional 10 foot swells that were gentle but big. Winds were out of the northeast at 20 knots or more. We set up and did a few drifts that produced another Sailfish that followed up a Google eye on the down line. As I was reeling in the baits to go back out we had ourselves a double header. The kite bait got hit as I was reeling it in so I set the hook and gave the rod to Glenn from Texas, then I went over to the down line to reel that one in so we wouldn't have ourselves a tangle, right at the boat I felt a thump and saw a huge shadow, I thought it was a Kingfish the way it hit the bait so I dropped the bait back down a few feet and the fish hit it again and this time he stuck and this Sailfish went airborn emmediately. So I fought this fish while Glenn was fighting his. His fish came to the boat first, so with one hand I grabbed the gaff and stuck his Kingfish and handed Glenn my rod to finish fighting the Sailfish. We got him to the boat for a picture and did high fives as we just had a successful double header to the boat. The Sailfishing has definitely picked up strong and Dolphin have been making a strong showing also.

Till next Tide,

Captain Cary Hanna
