Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big fish on the big seas.
The fishing biz has been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to report. The weather has been unstable to say the least. One day we are fishing flat calm seas the next day 6-10 foot seas. Last Friday we were pre-fishing the Harbor Town tournament in 2-3 footers and found smoker sized Kingfish in the 40 pound range, at least 3 that we released. I have the pictures coming in hardcopy so I will have them up shortly. We were all ready for the tournament on Saturday but they called it off due to the small craft advisory. So Sunday it was with seas basically flat. We went to our 'spot' and the fish were gonzo. We ended up in 3rd place with a 17.1 pound Kingfish. First place went to a 19.7 pound Dolphin and 2nd went to Greg with a 19 pound King.
The Sailfish have been hit or miss. Last week Dave and his fiancee went fishing in about 4-6 footers and found 2 Sailfish within the 4 hours. They came back to fish 2 days later with family to join and we couldn't raise even 1, although we did manage a huge Barracuda that hit the kite bait and then we found a big school of peanut Dolphin.
One day last week we were fishing the northwest winds which makes for nice flat conditions. We ran up north about 7 miles and found at least 2-3 dozen Kingfish before noon with Skip and his 3 longtime buds from Long Island. They were feeding out their lines and their baits were getting slammed everytime. We ran out of our 3 dozen baits fast. The guys were so adrenaline pumped they were trying to find anything on the boat that would catch them some more fish.
Local Angler Andy Aiyello took his 6 year old daughter out for her birthday and she got herself 1 20 pound Kingfish, 1 12 pound King and numerous Spanish Mackeral. She had a great time even in 2-4 foot seas. In these 20-30 mph winds we are still fishing, mostly in the intercoastal. We are catching big jack crevalle and even jumping Tarpon in the daytime along with Barracudas. Bob from Illinois came aboard twice this week to fish with his flyrod. It was great to see him work it having the bow all to himself. April and May are on their way. These are the best fishing months. Reserve a spot soon for some great fishing. Don't forget the Swordfish, my favorite moon is here.
Till next tide,
Captain Cary Hanna
