Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
May 11, 2004
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The "May" Dolphin are here!

This is prime time to get on the ocean in search for the Mahi-Mahi. Their running anywhere from 80 feet of water to past 400 feet. The schoolies usually run first and the bigger ones to follow but some of the larger ones have showed up already up to 40 pounds so far. You could troll a pair of socks and these greedy fish will swallow them whole. The Kingfish bit strongest for us last Saturday the 8th with 1 fish released at 40 pounds, another the same size lost at boatside and at least 10 others up to 20 pounds, a few Dolphin also hit us inside of a 100 feet up to 15 pounds.

On Sunday the wind picked up a bit and we were fishing with Jay from Weston and his 3 boys,5,9, and 11 years of age. Each of them got a chance to reel in a nice fish. On our first drift we started very deep and saw a lot of birds working the water. We decided to stop the boat and throw out some lines to test the water. After setting out the first rod I set up the 2nd and as I was letting it out the line started peeling off in freespool. Quickly I engaged the drag and we were on a nice Dolphin who was in the air emmediately. Within 20 seconds the first rod I set out bent over with more drag screaming off and another Dolphin went airborn. Double headers are the best. We let the drift take us all the way in and found a few Kingfish skyrocketing our Pilchards, we missed the first one estimated at 25 pounds and caught the next one under 20 pounds all the way in at 50 feet.

On Both of those days the action all took place right at sunup and lasted till about 9:00 am or so and then it slowed down as we picked a few fish here and there. This action should keep up for the rest of the month at least, in the numbers that we are seeing. This is the time of year when every bait in the livewell gets ate, especially the Goggle eye.

Till next Tide, Captain Cary Hanna
