Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
October 14, 2005
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Season Changes

We have had to work double hard the last couple weeks just to get some fish in the boat. Off the reef in between 1 and 200 feet of water the current has not been there, making it for slow fishing. Trolling has been working the best especially if you can get out to the edge which has been out past 3-400 feet. A few Dolphin have been caught there as well as some Sailfish bites.

On the inside the Kings have been hard to reach, but you have to be one of the boats in the right spot and you might hit the jackpot. We fished north all over the place and could not find a King but the guys who went south a few miles were in them pretty thick. We caught some AJ's on a shipwreck and aslo a huge Blue Runner on a deep bait. We put him right back down and trolled him around and he got slammed. We pulled the hook on the fish and came back with just the head. We had a Wahoo skyrocket a horse Pilchard from Ray's live bait and we missed it only to have an Oceanic Bonita get stuck on the same rod ? We put him right back out and trolled him around with the same result, we got back the head after a nice bite, even w/ a stinger rig on it. Something tells me Sharks are starting to show up. We did catch a small Bull Shark.

The Swordfishing has been good but we haven't had a shot at another big one like last month. Out of 2 trips we landed 3 of them. 2 hundred pounders and a smaller one. I always encourage to release the smaller fish but my client was looking to stock up his freezer, so that's his decision.

The cold fronts will be making their way here so be ready for some different action coming our way. As I type this we are already getting a northeasterly blow. I'm looking foward to a good winter season. I'm predicting that the Dolphin bite will be going off soon as we didn't get to see to many of them this past summer, they should be coming down the coast in good #'s this time.

Just a few select items to start with.

Till Next Tide,
