Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
December 19, 2005
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

What's biting now?

The most popular queastion of the week? "What is biting now?" The cold fronts have made fishing either rather difficult w/ 8-10 foot seas as Chris Burnett and crew found out last Thursday or rather nice as Paul Dittomasso and Bill Garret experienced on Friday.

Chris Burnett and crew toughed it out for 8 hours without any chumming. We started by catching bait and found plenty of Speedos and it was also good to see the Ballyhoo arriving. We fished for Sailfish and caught 2 and missed so many other fish. We also did some wreck fishing which was challenging in high seas but we managed a nice bite and pulled him off. I was glad to touch the docks at the end of the day.

The next day turned 180 degrees as seas became flat and the charter fleet was out in good numbers. We fished south of the Port and saw Kingfish skyrocketing balls of bait all day. What an awsome sight, you had to be there. We also bottom fished and came up with some nice Mutton Snappers and also caught a Sailfish that took a bait as we were dropping it to the bottom for Snapper. He turned out to be one of the smallest Sailfish I have seen. He must have weighed 25 pounds most. There are some Cobia around making their way to the south. If you have an eagles eye you can catch them on the surface.

Anytime that you can get out fishing during the winter season should be good. New fish are coming through and each day is a new challenge.

We have just upgraded our Swordfish arsenal and are now fishing new Shimano Tiagra 80 pound class gear across the board. I look foward to beaking these reels in with my customers. The Swordfish bite has still been great each month. The Winter Swordfish slam tournament that was 2 weeks ago brougt in the most big fish ever. A 310 pound fish came in first, then a 258lbs. for 2nd, 242 lbs. for 3rd, 211 lbs. for 4th, and 191lbs. for 5th. There are some big fish out there for sure.

We went Swordfishing last week and took out Steve Walls from Tampa. We had a Swordfish wack our live bait so hard, it's head was almost cleaned right off on a huge Blue Runner. These fish are amazing at what they can do with those bills. That's all for now. See you on the rip.
