Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Patterns Switch up

Sorry for the time between reports But I've been to busy to get behind the computer lately. Us Captains need some time to have a few of those drinks with the umbrellas in them once in awhile.

In our last report the fish bite was getting turned on when the cold fronts would come through, and thats the usual pattern for winter. Now as we start to approach our Spring the pattern is changing up a bit and on 3 separate occasions as we had gorgeous weather, 5 knot winds and seas at 1 foot, we were doing our best fishing going through every bait in the livewell and then hunting down more bait 2-3 hours into our trip. Sailfish were biting on just about every drift for us and also unlimited kingfish bites. The Kings would take the bait as you would be letting out the line. Just lightly have your thumb on the spool so you don't get the backlash and hit him as he slows down. Some Kings were upwards of 25-30 pounds. A good sign for whats coming soon. Even the Sailfish were friskier than usual. I got beat up twice trying to get pictures for the clients. Even with gloves on their bill can find a place to grab on your forarms. One thing to note is sometimes the Sailfish will attempt to throw their stomachs as they go bollistic on thier jumps. When you see a Sailfish coming boatside and you see this long tongue looking object hanging out it's stomach, its not his tongue...with careful movement you can slide his stomach right back into his mouth and try to recusitate him long enough so that everything slides back into place. This works basically 100 percent of the time. You never know what happens 5 minutes later but thats the price we pay for hooking into these fish sometimes.

On the other side of the weather, for the past week we've had a good blow from the east side and the bite has slowed down a bit. But as of yesterday I heard a few good reports so I look foward to getting back out on Thursday night and Friday all day. We had just a few Swordfishing trips in the last month but came back without any bragging rights. We have a trip lined up tonight the 16th so keep checking back in the gallery to see what were catching.

Catch em up,

Captain Cary Hanna
