Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Sails are back up!
For the past 2 weeks we have had some great action going on. On each trip we are producing Sailfish. It seems they are making their way to the south following the bait. Some are eating big Goggle Eye baits and the others are taking big Pilchards. Fighting a Sailfish in calm water is to the fish' advantage, he can use his body to brace himself against the water. Whenever the water is rough we can bring a Sail to the boat within 15 minutes verses 30 minutes on the calm days. Today Frank Vitukavich brought his 3 sons and they caught their first Sailfish as we were just about to reel them up and change locations. We had a double but we pulled the hook on the other one. Then we got into the Kingfish thick. We had a triple header on at one point. I though for sure we were into the Bonita but they all came in Kingfish.
The Kingfish have been nailing every live bait in the livewell. We have been leaving them biting to find other species like Dolphin. Earlier this week we set up the spread and as I'm letting out a line I spotted a nice size Dolphin cruising next to the boat. That was an easy one, we just pitched him a live bait and he made a bee line towards it and inhaled it in a half second.
Most of the rain storms have been inshore or over land. We have been having a great time in the early morning hours before the heavier afternoon storms come through.
It's time to start planning on those Swordfishing trips. Within the last week reports are showing that nice size fish are showing up. Last Saturday night was the HydraGlow Summer Swordfish Slam and a 247 pound fish won 1st place. We were not able to fish the tournament but we will be there for the next one for sure.
Enjoy summertime while it's here with the calm clear sea conditions. Every morning the ocean is basically flat as a lake.
