Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Roydhouse
May 5, 2002
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We made it to May. Not much of a winter at all. Just go outside at 8pm and you know you are into summer with the sun still high enough to let you tie knots without the help of a light bulb.

This is considered one of our peak fishing periods. Most all the species that spent the winter south in the warm waters are trying to go north for the summer. In order to do that they swim past our coastline to get there. It has not been as good as expected yet but there are signs and bent rods in the future. The canals are holding a fair amount of mullet and that has brought the Tarpon in. The Jacks are also tearing into them early each morning. Once the bait shows the gamefish are right behind. I also heard that the fish are starting to thin out down the Keys, and that is where our stocks come from. Offshore action has been made up of Dolphin, Kingfish, Bonita and an occasional Blackfin Tuna. The Sailfish are very scattered but showing up once in a while.

The seas are starting to get the Bahama crossing sense to them and I smell a few long weekends in my future.
