Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
As summer gets closer the memories of the constant need to drink and a sweat soaked shirt from the lack of breeze comes to mind. This past week helped to remind me of things to come. Very warm and flat calm mornings, although as I sit here sending this report in I am listening to the weather channel talk about the 15 to 20 mph winds coming in in the next day or two.
During the last week I fished with one of my long time regular customers that comes into town to go out on my boat everyday for a week or more to fish for anything that trys to taste our baits. He always takes a day to show his son the thrill of bending a rod and we go after smaller, more cooperative species to keep his intrest. Usually the inshore cudas and jacks will jump on the hook quickly and put up a great battle for a 9 year, so that was our plan. Sure enough the first bait out gets pounced by a 125 pound tarpon. Dad grabs the rod, son watches, but not for long since the hook was disconnected during an early attempt to get photos. Off we go to get junior a fish. A cuda does find the bait and a successful release is complete. Next another "jack" bait gets woofed and another tarpon misses the hook. We rebait and move another hundred yards to the next cuda corner and another tarpon jumps on. This rod makes it juniors hand and with a little help from dad a 9year old boy catches his first tarpon, around 50 pounds. I guess if we went tarpon fishing we would have never seen the first one. They where eating live goggles eyes rigged on wire and slow trolled through the residential canals in Fort Lauderdale.
This same system works for other species too. To catch sailfish go kingfishing with baits rigged on wire, to catch dolphin anchor over a wreck and put a bait on the bottom for snapper. Thats the great thing about fishing, you never know!
Sea Ya!
