Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale-Fishing
The first week of February has brought a well needed front to South Florida and a boost to its fishing. Dropping tempetures got the sailfish moving once again. As always, live baiting for these gamesters bring the best results. Keeping the tackle light (thirty pound or under) keeps the fights fair and exciting. Suspending goggle eyes under the kite, on the days that provided enough wind, produced good results. The current has been a little off however. Instead of a good north current with blue water during the front we were cursed with south or no current and dirty water. With the south current the fish move through faster, often crashing baits and coming up jumping, producing a low hook up ratio.
During these conditions I sometimes like to pull live ballyhoos to cover more ground and start pulling them offshore to deeper water. It is hard to leave that 100 to 200 foot zone where they are normally found, but sometimes it pays off big. In 500 feet I was pulling the hoos around and finally found the "EDGE" I was rewarded with north current, debris, blue water and fish. First on the scene was a sailfish. Next we encountered a log and the mahi mahi. After catching a box full up to 15 pounds, we put out the deep baits and captured three wahoos. We got the best of them and by the time all the other boats got there the bite was over.
