Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale Sportfishing
End of February 1st week of March
The end of February was very hit or miss. One day the fish were there in good numbers the next they were no where to be found. One or two boats would get lucky and the rest would struggle. I guess that's why they call it fishing and not catching. The kings, bonitas and even amberjacks were tough, it seemed like it was sailfish or nothing. However some wahoos made a decent showing. The wahoos were a nice bonus, some small blackfins have been around as well. Better off releasing them as they were in the 5-10 # range.
However one fish that is coming on strong and beginning their annual spring run is the shark! I'm not talking about little blacktips or small reef sharks, I'm talking about big hammerheads, threshers and if your really lucky a mako. Targeting the gamefish is pretty serious. The big guns come out, nothing less than 80's are the way to go. We use about 10 feet of 3-400# mono attached to 5-6 of #19 wire. Kingfish and bonitas make the best baits. We normally suspend one from the kite, one on a balloon halfway down and then another on bottom. Dont forget your chum bag and dont be afraid to hang some carcasses of your stern. Put a couple gogs out on your second kite and your in business.
