Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report for 7/22-7/27

The last week we have been live bait fishing on the reef. There have been some good kingfish bites in the last week with fish ranging from 10-20lbs. One day they are thick the next we have been picking at them. We have been also been catching lots on bonitas, cudas, sailfishn as well as other assorted fish. Wednesday, 7/25 was the opening of lobster mini season in Florida and the conditions were perfect. I took my sister out on out flats boat and within 40 minutes in the water we had out limit of 24. Lobsters were thick and their weren't that many people out.

We have started to catch bait for some upcoming tournaments, the Jurrassic Drift Swordfish tournament and the Gauntlet/Saltwater Showdown. On our way back from baitfishing this morning we pulled some high speed lures, and nailed a 25lb. wahoo within 5 minutes of lines in the water. Though we pulled the lines for another 45minutes without a bite, its a good sign that their are some wahoo around.

Today 7/27

Today I fished with three guys from pennsylvania and there friend from down here. We started out slow trolling live baits on the reef, which resulted in numerous slashed baits, and a kingfish caught out in 190 ft. A little deep but we continued out and worked a weedline/slick in 200 that worked out deeper. When we hit 250 we missed a bite followed by a very big sailfish. After a lengthy fight and release we slow trolled a little longer with only a few more chomped baits to show. We decided to jig the deep wrecks wich resulted in bonitas on the jigs, and a few bites that couldn't be turned away from the wrecks, most likely AJ's. Summer patterns are here and even the fish are hiding from the heat.

We are fishing the Jurassic Drift Sword tournament on Keepin It Reel a 35 Seahunter, on saturday and have another couple sword charters starting sunday night. I will update next week when I can recover some sleep.
