Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report for last couple weeks 9/3-9/15
Last few weeks we have had conditions go from excelent to really tough. Starting out a two weeks ago we were having excellent action with kingfish on the reef. Fish were in the 10-20lb. range and were averaging a dozen a trip to go along with bonitas, sailfish, and other fish. This past week fishing was hit or miss. If the current was moving north on the reef we did well, if it slacked the fishing dropped off.
Earlier this week we went swordfishing a few times only to experience slow action. Every night action was had, but mostly slow. Thursday night we had a fish on pulling drag for a few minutes only to pull the hook. Finished the night with six bites with only one pulling drag. Saturday's charter we had two good fish pulling drag, one came off a few seconds in, one we fought for close to 15 minutes before the hook pulled. One of the fish ate in the lights and smoked the reel and pulled off shortly there after. That night we also had a 100lb. fish swim around the boat and refuse our baits. You really can't complain about a trip where you get to fight one fish and get to watch two other fish swim in the light. The fish are there just not biting like we want them too. October is usually when we start to see the bite really turn on. Most of our bites were on live bait which is why we had bad results as most of the leaders came back coiled from being wrapped on the bill. Most of our action had been between Fort Lauderdale and a few miles north of Hillsboro Inlet.
Thursday 9/13 reef action was steady with kingfish and a few dolphin making a showing. Several dolphin in the 15-20lb. range were caught and we also had a shot at sailfish.
Saturday 9/15 I had a single person charter and the reef action was dead. We started out of Hillsboro inlet slow trolling goggle eyes. No bites. Moved norht of Boca. Two slashed bait, one fish we had on really for a short time and the hooks pulled. I heard of a few small king being caught which explain the slashes on my jumbo gogs. 10am no fish yet time to fish the wrecks, 1st wreck nothing, 2nd wreck nothing, this is starting to get really bad, 3rd wreck is going off. Every drop we are catching fish, drift off the wreck the fish are still there. Singles and doubles on AJ's were the norm, including doubles on one jig. We caught Aj's in the 10-15 pound range, Alamacos in the 5lb. range, kingfish ~10lbs., and on the last drop a 30lb. cobia. In an hour we caught 12 aj's almacos, kingfish, and a cobia, and had to take two water breaks with the heat. The current may be dead but the the fish are still chewing down deep. The wreck we did well on sits in 220 out of Hillsboro inlet, and used jigs from 5 to 7ozs.
