Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report from a recent Charter:
On Friday, October 3, 2002, four of us went fishing on the Lady Pamela II with Captain Kunta Smith. We left the dock on Las Olas Blvd and A1A at about 4:30 PM for a full night charter. Capt. Smith took the boat to
a point about 12 miles off South Beach drifted blue runners and large squid. After an hour drifting, I was first up in the fighting chair when the reel on the rod with the deepest bait began to click. Wally
the mate set the hook and handed me the rod. The fish swam deep for a little bit but soon tired was hauled in quickly. After being boated by Wally, the swordfish measured 74 inches overall and weighed 60 lbs. Next up, Dwayne Warner fought a twenty-five minute battle with a 100 lb, 84 inch swordfish. About an hour later, John Kelly matched Dwayne's
battle answering with a similar size fish. However, when the fish saw the gaff, it ripped the hook from its soft mouth and bolted. About 2 AM, the mate and I were the last men standing when another strong bite got me back in the chair. After a twenty-minute long deep run the fish began to tire and I stated to gain some ground against the drag. After two more long runs and many cranks on the reel, I landed a 120 lb, 90 inch swordfish. The boat was three for four and I had two of them.
Captain Smith and his mate Wally is the most energetic crew I have chartered. When a fish was hooked both instantly sprang into action to
maneuver the boat and position the angler while continuously giving instructions to the client in the fighting chair. Within 10 minutes
after landing a fish, the pair had new baits in the water and was back fishing. These two are serious and good crew. Who would have though we would have caught four swords in one night?
Thank you,
Bob Hartmann
