Fort Lauderdale, FL - Offshore

Capt. David Ide
February 18, 2003
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish & Threshers

Sailfish are still biting when the wind blows NW to the NE.

The Sharks are moving through. Thresher Sharks are being caught in 300’ of water using Kingfish and Bonitos for bait. There was a big Mako shark caught that weighed 805 lbs. this week.

The Bull Sharks have been eating every Amberjack that we hook on the wrecks.

We have been catching a few Kingfish on the reef.

February is tough fishing and we’ve really had to work hard to catch fish.

Last Monday we had a group that wanted to catch some Dolphin fish (Mahi-mahi). We said that we haven’t heard of any around. The charter said “Don’t worry, we always catch them”. We ran offshore and saw some birds in 600’ of water. We threw out some strips and ballyhoo. A small buoy with some line and a small piece of wood was floating and we made a pass by it. All four lines went down! 3 Dolphin and a small Wahoo. These people we some lucky. We threw out some live bait and fished the area for over an hour. We kept catching Dolphin! We ended up with over a dozen Dolphins and missed a couple more small Wahoo. What a half-day of fishing.

The Swordfish are still biting at night when the weather is right. Three Swordfish were weighed in over 300 lbs. last week. We were only out one night and we released a 50 lb fish.

Lets go Fishing!

Catch-em-up,

Capt. Kunta
