Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The next few days are going to be pretty choppy. Winds between 19-25 mph are being forecast over the next couple days. While some people might cringe and be unhappy with the weather, I for one am happy. Choppy weather gets the fish hungry and biting. It keeps most of the small boats back at the dock, so less competition for spots and for fish. And as my dad always said to me, 'activity on the top of the water, begets activity below'.

Dolphin, tuna, wahoo and sailfish are the main species biting on the reef while trolling. Trolling is a very effective technique to cover a lot of territory and hopefully find a variety of pelagic fish. Kite fishing is another good technique this time of year, especially when it is windy. You need a strong wind if you want to kite fish. Kite fishing is extremely good for fishing for sailfish.

On our drift fishing boat, the night anchor trips usually do the best catching fish. We are catching yellowtail snappers, porgies, groupers, grunts, triggerfish, jacks and all the assorted bottom fish that live on the reef. The action is usually very good. Day trips are pretty decent too, but the night trip is my favorite.

Good luck to everyone fishing this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
