Sailfish, Blackfins, Wahoo, Kingfish

Capt. Ryan McBride
August 12, 2008
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sometimes fish forget what time of the year it is and show up when they aren't supposed to. This past weekend we had a wide open sailfish bite, the only problem was that we were fishing a tournament that they don't count for. We had shots at 6 fish on saturday and there were other fish spotted we just kept moving on and pulling baits from their mouths as they weren't the intended species. The previous day we went 2 for 3 on sails in less than 3 hours of fishing. Also the blackfin tunas are still around in numbers, this time of the year they are normally just an occasional catch but in the tournament from this past week good numbers of them were weighed with a couple boats catching more than one. The past year has overall been slow for them the late season bite might be making up for it. Best bet for them has been fishing from boca to boynton with goggle eyes. There is a good shot at wahoo high speed trolling and live baiting the reef from 150-300ft. up and down our coast with most fish in the 20-40lb. range and enough big fish to keep it exciting. The bite will continue to improve coming up to the next full moon. Best bet for them has been live goggle eyes and blue runners slow trolled and fished off the kite. Kingfish remain consistent with most fish in the 10-20lb. range. The wrecks have been slow but there are still as few amberjacks and other species mixed in to keep the bites coming. Best bet on the wrecks have been butterfly jigs and pinfish.

Offshore the dolphin fishing has been slow, but the few fish that are there are being located under floating debris. The daytime swordfishing has been improving with a good amount of fish in the 100-300 pound range being caught.
