Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We're having a great week this week fishing for sailfish and mahi-mahi. The cooler weather is getting a lot of the surface feeding fish super frisky. Sailfish love the cold and the bite always heats up whenever the weather cools down. Kite fishing is hands down the best technique to target sailfish. It allows you to present the baits perfectly so that they can see them and feel them (a fishes lateral line actually feels fish vibrations from a great distance) from a ways away. And the best thing about kite fishing is that you can actually watch the sailfish come up and chase the bait around on the surface. The whole bite sequence is really quite a show. Hook up ratios using the kite fishing technique dwarf all other fishing methods. When a sailfish comes up for a kite bait, a hookup is high percentage.

Dolphin bite good on the kites too, especially the big ones. Catching dolphin is usually not the problem. The problem with them comes in finding them. This time of year, the strong East winds prevail, and blow the weedlines in closer and closer to shore. This in turn blows the flying fish and other baitfish that follow the weedlines, closer and closer to shore. And ultimately the big game critters such as mahi mahi, tuna and marlin, in closer and closer to shore. We often see dolphin fish in as shallow as 40ft of water this time of year. But fishing the reef and the inside edge of the Gulfstream, just a mile and half from shore, is generally your best bet at action this fishing season. It puts you in potential areas for all the desirable species... sailfish, tuna, wahoo, mahi, kingfish, bonito, pompano and cobia. And not too far away from wreck fishing depths to fall back on fishing some shipwrecks if the trolling and live baiting doesn't pan out. After all, it is called "fishing", not "catching". Good luck to everyone fishing this week. Tight Lines!
