Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

May is the month for giants. This is when all the biggest fish of the year bite. Sailfish, sharks, marlin, swordfish, and more are the big game fish we target when on our Fort Lauderdale fishing charters this month. Sailfish, traditionally are a fall/winter fish. These past few years, sailfish have been biting strong later and later into the year. This year is proving to be another year where the sailfish are biting the strongest, much later into the year than expected.

The sailfish bite is strong along "Sailfish Alley", the area between 150-300ft deep of water that runs parallel to the Fort Lauderdale beach. This is the area just outside of reef and the inside edge of the Gulfstream. All the migrating fish swim along this stretch of water in search of food and it is the best area for us to target them. We generally go trolling, which allows us to target not just sailfish, but other species too. But if the conditions are right for it, kite fishing is the most targeted way to fish for sailfish. You need some wind, and some live goggle eyes or other strong bait that will survive being dangled from the kite. If you have those, kite fishing this time of year can catch you that sailfish when no other method works.

There's lots of other good fish biting besides sailfish but at New Lattitude Sportfishing, we generally try to fish for the biggest gamefish around and sailfish certainly fit that bill. Shark fishing gets really, really good this month too. I'll talk about shark fishing in my next report. Good luck out there fishing everyone. Tight Lines,
