Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish season is here! Every year, usually beginning in October and lasting through the middle of March, we have a world-class sailfish migration down our coastline. These gamefish range anywhere from 5-8ft in length and are one of the most sought after game fish in the ocean. The reason: they fight super hard for their size, stay on the top of the water for most of the fight so you can actually land them using lighter tackle than most fish (more sporting) and they jump throughout the fight putting on one of the most awesome spectacles of any gamefish in the ocean. Yes, it's safe to say that sailfish are the most exhilarating big game species that we catch fishing in Fort Lauderdale.

The winds picked up this week, a strong Easterly, blowing up to 20 knots. This is PRIME sailfish weather. One of our most effective techniques to fish for sailfish, kite fishing, is perfect for these windy days. The kites allow us to present the baits to fish in a different way than almost any other fishing technique. And the best thing about kite fishing is the awesome show a sailfish puts on during the bite sequence. A pair of polarized sunglasses, which cuts the glare off the water, really lets you see the action. Sailfish come up to the live bait, chase it around, smacking it with it's bill and ultimately swallows it down and starts jumping in a truly amazing acrobatic spectacle. The prime sailfish season has just begun and we're already putting the first pegs on the board for caught fish this season. If you've ever wanted to catch a world class gamefish, this is the time of year to do a sportfishing charter in Fort Lauderdale and you're chances will be really good at catching one (or multiples on really good days). Every day is different so you never know what may bite until you're on the water. Good luck to everyone fishing this month. Tight Lines and Good Fishing!
