Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Matt Cleveland and Darric Hawkins, together with four other co-workers from Genbev, a distributor of beverages, were in Fort Lauderdale FL for their annual convention and while here chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We had winds out of the east at 5 miles an hour, blue skies, with 2 ft. seas. We stopped and purchased a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait on our way out to the fishing ground. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in the water at the sea buoy that sits in 120 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale, FL.

There was very little current that day, so I trolled towards some of our artificial wrecks located in Fort Lauderdale FL, ranging from 60 ft. deep to 420 ft. deep. I had two plainers down both with Bonito strips and sea witches and for surface baits I went with four Ballyhoos. Trolling around the artificial wrecks, the anglers caught a dozen Bonitos and Kingfish. With the winds finally picking up, it was time to fly the kites. We positioned ourselves over one of the artificial wrecks that's located in 145 ft of water with two kites flying, two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the rigger. The anglers were enjoying their beers while waiting for the black shadow. Right Long!!!! Dorsal and bill out of the water as an aggressive Sailfish charged the live Goggle Eye. Once he ate the bait, he immediately came out of the water showing his speed and power as he "walked" on the water. Darric was the angler and he did a fantastic job keeping the line taught throughout the whole battle. The Sailfish was brought into the boat for picture taking and was released to fight again.

We relocated on another wreck and set up the kites again. This time a lethargic Sailfish appeared on the right short, and he circled the bait very slowly. I told our mate, Jackson, to raise the bait out of the water and drop it, making the bait splash thereby enticing the Sailfish. Then another Sailfish appeared along side of the first Sailfish to the amazement of everyone in the boat. Both circled the live Goggle Eye, as the bait kept jumping out of the water frantically trying to get away from both predators. But neither Sailfish were hungry and they just swam away. Left Long!!!! An explosion of water took place on the left long as the line exited the reel at a very fast speed. Matt was the angler on the tug of war on this fish as he gained line and loss line. Finally the fish was brought to the side of the boat; our mate gaffed the fish with extreme care – as the razor sharp teeth in his jaws were snapping – it was a 44 lb Anaconda Kingfish.

Everyone had a good time, but it was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
