Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The smoker kingfish and sailfish are biting like rock stars this week. It's been a tough week on sailfish but this week we've seen a big turnover in their numbers. Probably a result of the cold temperatures we've been experiencing this past week. Sailfish love the cold fronts. It gets them feisty. Our best day this week, we caught 3 sailfish in the morning and then right back out there for 3 more on the afternoon run. We missed 2 other sailfish that would have made 5 if we had got them too. This is the winter sailfish action we have been waiting for. Sailfish are not fair weather fish. You can catch them when its flat calm and sunny, but they bite so much better when the seas are churned up and you have to bundle up to go out and go fishing.
Some smoker kingfish have been hitting the dock this week. I've heard more than a few loud 'thuds' this week when kingfish have been thrown up onto the dock. That means a smoker! We've caught some 40-50 pounders this week, the biggest ones we may catch all year. This is the season for smoker kingfish. While many don't like to eat kingfish cooked as a regular fish dish, smoked kingfish is plain ole' awesome to make into a smoked fish dip. I put up enough smoked fish dip this time of year to last us all year. We're catching a lot of the 10-12 pound kings as well, which are the normal good sized ones. These 40 pound plus ones are very rare. A few small wahoo, blackfin tunas are getting caught mixed in with kings and sailfish and that's been our fishing this week off Fort Lauderdale. Not a lot of fish, but some really big ones. January is typically a great month to go out there and catch some really big fish. Good luck to everyone fishing with us this week. I will sea ya on the water.
