Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish season is red hot after the cold front we had this past weekend. The chilly weather really got them lit up. January is probably the peak of sailfish season before it starts tailing down towards the end of February. Sailfish like cool weather and rough seas. The strong east wind is when the bite is best. We're having some pretty good winds over the next few days so it should be very conducive to sailfishing. Mahi-mahi also like the strong winds so it should be good for both sailfish and the mahi fishing this week. Kite fishing is the best technique to go after sailfish but trolling is working well too. Trolling has the advantage in that you are mobile and can cover a lot more territory out there. This is good for catching sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo kingfish and more... all the fish that live on the reef and the edge of the Gulfstream.

Swordfish are the other big game species that is biting good out there. January is one of the best months for swordfish both daytime and night time. We catch some of our biggest swordfish of the year this month. On a recent swordfish trip, we had a huge mako shark come up as we were fighting the swordfish. The giant mako attached the swordfish as it was about to be boated. After a brutal tug of war with the mako shark, the mako won. He got our swordfish. We tried to hook into the mako but he was too busy enjoying the spoils of his victory. It ended up being trip for a very lucky mako and a very unlucky swordfish. It's a dog eat dog world out there in the deep blue sea.
The big game fishing season is just getting started. We have a couple more months of great sailfish to look forward to, swordfishing is getting better and better every day and the big game shark fishing season is just around the corner. There's at least 1 monster mako offshore right now! That's for sure. Good luck to everyone fishing over the next few days. Tight Lines!
