Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We're coming into shark fishing season at full speed. The big sharks are already biting good and we're just in the first couple weeks of the season. This week we've caught several big hammerhead sharks, a few duskys and one big mako shark (exotic for our waters). Every year, from around January through the end of June, we have a massive migration of some of the largest and most sought after game sharks in the world. We specialize in shark fishing charters this time of year as many big game anglers come from all around to the world to take part in our shark fishing season. There isn't any thrill in the world better than being strapped into the fighting chair, hooked into a fish so big it could eat you in a couple bites.

Just the other day we caught a very large mako shark, which is a rare shark to catch in Ft Lauderdale waters. Mako sharks are northern sharks because they prefer the cold water. We rarely have cool enough waters to support mako sharks here. This is one of the only few months of the year where catching a mako shark is possible. We caught this mako using a 10 pound bloody bonito sunk down on the bottom in about 300ft of water, right on the thermocline. Big sharks like to patrol along this line because so many pelagic species also congregate along this invisible temperature break in the water. Sharks go where the food is.

Mako sharks are one of the only sharks that jump, which is one of the main attractions for catching them. They also have a wicked set of jaws, some of the gnarliest teeth in the ocean, and that's saying a lot. Sailfish, another big game fish that is famous for it's awesome aerial display are also biting good this month. Sailfish also love the cooler water and thrive in Ft Lauderdale right on the outside edge of the reef. Sailfish have been biting excellent over the past couple weeks and have been our main attraction when not much else has been going on. Sailfish are biting very strong this month and will likely be here through the beginning of March when they slow down. Spring brings with it big amberjacks, barracuda, huge sharks and a few other big game species through out waters, but sailfish much prefer the winter months. We're likely to continue to have good sailfishing and shark fishing charters for the foreseeable future. This is a great time to come out to catch some really big game.

Good luck to everyone fishing with us over the next couple week.s Tight Lines and Good Fishing!
