Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Winds were out of the east at 10 mph as the sun played peek-a-boo with the clouds, and the temperature was in the mid 80's this afternoon.
Jim Krause with sons, Jake and Kyle, along with Steve Taylor and his sons, Rob and Steve Jr. from Texas chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing Fort Lauderdale FL. Jake right away put his request in for a "large fish". I responded by asking if a Shark would be sufficient, and he replied, before I could finish the sentence, YES.
Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock at Bahia Mar, lines were in the water at the sea buoy located in 120 ft. of water, less than 2 miles off shore of Fort Lauderdale FL. We started off trolling with two plainers down, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon, which is my favorite, and the other with a blue and purple sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip. For surface baits we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips. I kept working the reefs and everyone took turns catching fish - a total of 10 Bonitos ranging from 6-17 lbs. The plainer rod bent over and screamed off the line – I knew this would be a nice fish. Steve Taylor was the angler and he played a tug of war with the fish. Thirty feet from the boat I could see the fish flashing his colors down deep. Steve reeled the fish in and Jackson, our mate, gaffed a 29 lb. Anaconda Kingfish, which is a dangerous fish due to his razor sharp teeth.
With plenty of fish in the fish box, it was time to go and find Jake's request for a Shark. I headed out to the Shark grounds in 400 ft. of water. We put out one surface Shark bait, one midrange Shark bait and one bottom Shark bait, while all the boys sat in the cockpit calling the fish, "Here fishy, fishy." With twenty minutes left in our fishing time, wondering if I should make a move and try another location, the bottom rod bent over!!!! Jake hopped into the fighting share to do battle with the unknown specie. Forty minutes later, the dorsal fin broke the surface belonging to a Bull Shark, estimated weight 225 lbs. Jake did a fantastic job bringing the Shark to the side of the boat, while pictures were taken, and the Shark was ultimately released to fight again.
With a smile on Jake's face and a sore arm, he retired to the a/c salon, along with the others for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
