Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The bottom fishing action has been pretty good this week with some nice sized mutton snappers being caught, as well as some other big bottom fish. June is a good month for bottom fishing as the surface water temperatures are rising and fish are going deeper. June is also the month of the mangrove snapper spawn, when the larger mangroves get extra aggressive. We've been seeing some big mangroves this week. This usually happens on the full moons during the summer months. Groupers too have been mixed in the catches lately, some reds, strawberries and a few big, big blacks. Most groupers are in the 3-5 pound range but black groupers can get up to 30 pounds.

We do a few trips for snappers, our daily drift fishing trips and the night anchor trip. I highly recommend the afternoon or night trips as snappers do bite better later in the day and during the night. The morning snapper bite usually doesn't get going until 11am or so. Trolling the reef is also working very well for the small tunas, bonitos and kingfish, but trolling is going to be the main subject of most of my reports for the next 3 months, this one is about snappers. Good luck to all the bottom fishermen this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
