Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The title says it all. Our drift fishing trips are starting to catch a good variety of snappers on our daily drift and anchor trips. Mutton snappers are biting pretty good on the daytime trips. Mutton snappers are the bigger snappers that we catch. Last year, the minimum size limit was raised and many of the mutton snappers that we catch are just shy of the legal limit. So many of them have to go back. But we do catch some big ones too which can get really big. At night, the yellowtails and the mangroves bite best. We catch a lot of them when we anchor and chum the water to draw the fish to us. This technique works really well, especially at night. Yellowtails are mostly legal size ones and the mangroves are almost all keepers. Plenty of grunts, porgies and jacks are biting too to keep you busy.
On the other charters that we run, our sportfishing charters, the sailfish are running really good. They are biting in 100-200ft of water, just a mile offshore of the Fort Lauderdale beach. We're catching them by trolling and/or by kite fishing. Both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages, so try either one. I like trolling because it gives you good chances of catching other species too, like kingfish and tunas and it allows you to cover a lot of different areas out there. The more ground you can cover, the better. Not many mahi caught this week, but they are most assuredly on their way here. Late March and early April is always the best time of the year to catch mahi (and usually the big ones).
Plenty of fish are biting and while we don't crush them every day, we do have some pretty good fishing days this month. Even the slow days we generally catch some fish. Call me anytime to schedule a reservation. Let's go fishing!
