Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

There are some big swordfish biting on our Daytime swordfishing trips. We caught 2 this week on 2 different charter trips. For swordfish, we travel about 14 miles offshore to get out to 1100ft of water. We drop down with electric reels and wait for the bite. I like to use eels as bait, sewn to keep them on the hook while the swordfish slashes at them. If you use squid, which do work well, the bait can come loose off the hook before the swordfish swallow it. Eels work well, squid can be used, bonito bellies. All make good swordfish baits. Swordfishing is very easy, most of the time you are just waiting for the bite. Hours and hours of boredom interrupted by a moment of panic.

At New Lattitude Sportfishing, we specialize in fishing for swordfish on both day and night charters. The main difference between the 2 is that on the day trips, we fish on the bottom using electric reels and on the night trips, we drift using balloons to keep the baits positioned where we want them. Our electric reel that we use during the daytime swordfishing trips has a hand crank function so we can fight the fish out of the fighting chair when we hook up. Most electric reels don't have that functionality. Spring is a fine month to go swordfishing in Fort Lauderdale. The choppy waters keep most of the swordfishing boats from going out, so not as much competition out there for fish. If you're interested in going out for a swordfishing charter, give us a call. We have availability over the next few weeks for some swordfishing charters. This week will be very windy but we have a larger vessel which can handle the seas. Good luck to everyone fishing this week. Tight lines and good fishing!
