Tropical Storms Snappers Sharks Dolphin

Capt. Ryan McBride
July 25, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

With a tropical storm brewing in the carribean, the seas were up all last week off Fort Lauderdale. Fishing remained consistent if our fishing charters were willing to put in their time in the rough seas. Kingfish from 10-20lbs were biting on the reef but slowed with the full moon. This is their normal pattern as they tend to spawn on the moon.
On the bottom the snappers were the best bet of the week. If it wasn't too rough mutton were biting from 40-150ft. of water. Best bite was from 80-40 ft. and we did best fishing a kingfish fillet on a long leader. Our Ft. Lauderdale fishing charters were averaging 5 muttons in a half day all while also targeting kingfish. Yellowtails were on the deeper end of reef but were harder to get to bite with the seas and were more of a bycatch. Look for the snapper bite to be fantastic this week now that the the storms have past and the seas are calming.
We also had a few dolphin every trip last week until the blue water pushed offshore. In between bites we caught bonitas and hammerhead sharks. Hammerheads seem to be fairly common this year, much more so that in the past few years. We have caught several in the 60-150lb. range and are a great fight on 20lb. test.
Though green water has kept the blue water speedsters known as wahoo spread out, we are now in prime time to target wahoo off of the Fort Lauderdale coast. Now through October and on we have the ability to catch wahoo within 2 miles of the coast. I like to slow troll big live baits from 150-400ft of water both on the surface and down deep on downriggers. Most fish are in the 25-50lb. range with a few fish upwards of 100lbs caught each year. Give us a call if you would like to give it a try.
Swordfishing should be hot with the calming seas as it was before the blow, with nighttime fishing needing a little time to get better as we get away from the full moon.
I have a cancellation this friday and saturday (7/30&7/31)if you are looking for a last minute charter give me a call. Additionally I am now offering a $50-100 (1/2-full) discount till the end of Aug for mid (Mon-Thurs) week charters. Just for a limited time to keep me busy until our season picks up again.
