Tuna and Mackerel North of Port Everglades

Capt. Mario Cote
November 5, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last week we fished with Gerard Lapointe of Tamarac and 3 of his friends from Montreal. First we bought 3 dozens pilchard from Julie live bait and headed south out of Port Everglades. We setup in 300' of water with east wind at 15 to 20 knots – and drifting inshore very quickly. Our fist drift with 2 deep lines and 2 surface lines did not produce a bite.

Later, we decided to go in and circle around the whistle buoy – also without success. We moved a few miles north of the inlet in 350' and again put 2 deep lines, 2 surface baits and 2 baits hung from the kite. A bite came quickly on the kite line, but we lost the fish and never saw what it was.

The first 3 hours were slow, but the last hour produced some excitement and a lot of action catching 6 skipjack tuna, 2 little tunny, 4 mahi and a Spanish mackerel . Some were caught trolling with small feathers and other were caught on live pilchards - between 100' and 250' of water just a little north of Port Everglades Inlet.
