Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
We are finally fully into what I call our spring fishing off Fort Lauderdale. Kingfish, dolphin, blackfin tunas, cobias, sailfish, bonitas, snappers and others have shown up and are a possibility any day.
Kingfish are biting on the reef and we are catching between 6-12 per trip. We have been catching them on live bait and jigs with the best action coming in the 90-140ft depth range.
Sailfish remain off the Ft. Lauderdale coast with most days we are getting at least one shot. Last week we fished the World Sailfish Championship in key west and caught 12 over 3 days of competition. It was good enough for 3rd and even paid for the trip. Coming home we caught two on a four hour trip on monday making you believe these fish are still going to be around for a while.
Also on the reef the big blackfin tunas have showen up. Our fish have been from 18-25lbs but its only a matter of time before the 30+lb. bruisers show up. Last year our biggest blackfin tipped the scale at 37lbs. which is a giant when it comes to blackfin tunas.
Offshore and on the reef we have been catching a good amount of dolphin. We have been doing best fishing under debris and birds offshore. They have been averaging 4-10lbs but we have caught a handful of fish from 20-30lbs a week ago when we last ran offshore.
Also offshore the swordfishing has been good with fish biting pretty well over the last month. This should remain good as long as the weather allows us to fish.
On the bottom cobias are holding on the wrecks. The main concentration has moved to the north but their is still a good concentration of fish following the bull sharks that have taken up residence on are wrecks.
Also on the bottom yellowtail snappers are biting well and have been of a good sized varity. While yellowtailing we have been catching a few mutton snappers. Vermie snappers have been on the the deeper wrecks and taste great especially now that season opened on april 1.
Give me a call to get in on my favorite time of the year for fishing off Fort Lauderale.
