Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tying the knot aboard Hooked Up off the coast of fort Lauderdale
December 13th, 2012
Ok I've got to start out by saying that I have been fishing on charter boats since June of 1988 and this was for sure a first for me!!
It all started out 3 weeks ago when I got a call from Melisa from Boston who was coming down to Fort Lauderdale with her boyfriend Shawn also from Boston and she wanted to surprise him with a fishing trip.
Now Melisa had signed them up on a shared charter to be joined by others to help split the cost of the trip.
Ok everything seemed normal enough.
Till I got a call from Shawn who had not only found out about the fishing trip but had also found out that they would be fishing aboard the Hooked Up with Captain Taco.
(I've got to back up a bit on this fishing report and yes this will soon turn into a fishing report.)
The reason that Melisa really wanted to fish with me aboard the Hooked Up was a little over a year ago Melisa and her dad had fished with me and caught a sailfish and her dad has since passed and it was the last fishing trip they had together.
Ok back to Shawn who now knew they would be fishing with us and was also aware of why.
Well about 3 days before our trip I get a call from this guy Shawn who was not supposed to know about the trip and he asked me NOT to get anyone else to share the cost and that he would be paying the difference.
Ok things still seemed normal till the night before the trip Shawn called me again and asked if I could have a good bottle of champion aboard for them? I said that I would but I also asked what was the occasion for drinking champion so early in the day?
That's when it all came to me he was going to propose to her on the fishing trip off the coast of Fort Lauderdale aboard the Hooked Up!
Well at the point I could not help but to ask him if he would mind giving us a gratuity before the trip?
Shawn asked why and I replied just in case she said no! (LOL)
Well we had some laughs over that and yes I got the champion along with strawberries and some nice glasses.
All righty now so off we went on our fishing trip.
Today I was working the cockpit due to an injury that Captain Paul had gotten.
So we started out catching little bonitos that we kept alive for live bait for later in the trip.
After catching plenty of bait we went off shore trolling and caught a hand full of small black fin tunas.
Ok now it was time to try for the big one so in came the trolling gear and out went the small live bait.
We slow trolled these baits everywhere without a bite and time was running out. For some reason I looked up at Captain Paul and yelled out come on Paul just put us on one nice fish! Within 2 seconds of me saying this to Paul a sailfish jumped on one of the baits and we were Hooked Up. I looked around for Shawn but as it turned out he was down stairs getting everything ready for the big proposal.
I handed the rod to Melisa and the fight was on. At this point Shawn came running out and we were all rooting Melisa on.
15 min after we had Melisa's big sailfish to the boat. We got a quick measurement and a few pictures and set him free to fight again another day.

Than I got the nod from Shawn so I headed up stairs with Paul and just slowly headed back toward the port. Truth being told here Paul and I were a bit nervous too WHAT IF SHE SAYS NO??
But once we heard her crying and kissing all over Shawn I thought it was time to break open the bottle of champion and give them some alone time.

WOW Melisa and Shawn CONGRATULATIONS this trip will go down in history aboard the Hooked Up and I got this weird feeling that somehow your dad was there with us.

Fishing with 14-year old Matt off the coast of Fort Lauderdale
December 10th, 2012
Today we fished with 14-year-old Matt from Cape Coral Florida.
Now I can tell that this 14-year-old young man knows his stuff about fishing. In fact had caught big groupers, cobias along with a host of other fish so I knew this was going to be a hard order to fill and to top things off fishing had been slow the last few days.
All the same we went right to trolling the reef and catching a couple big bonitos and 1 Spanish mackerel.
Truth being told here fishing the reef was just slow today so we decided to try trolling out in deeper water. And BAM while they were not real big fish the black fin tunas were biting and we ended up with about a dozen.

Matt you are a fine young man and we hope to fish with you again this winter while the sailfish are here.
