Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, this week in Fort Lauderdale just like the title says its been a super windy week, being our first true cold front coming to the area usually brings some pretty decent fishing even though the ocean is a bit choppy. This week we will start on the inshore side of things, early in the week before the front pushed through the winds were light and the ocean was calm and the kingfish bite was still pretty red hot, trolling still was the best technique and trolling with baits under the surface is just a winning combination for the time being. During the middle of the week when the winds started to pick up and the ocean began to get choppier we seen a nice trickle of some sailfish action, now that being said we did catch a few on the troll with strip baits and ballyhoo but the best technique was kite fishing with live baits. Kite fishing involves using a kite in order to keep your live baits on the surface of the water leaving for all your terminal tackle like line, leaders, etc out of the water and only the live bait and the hook in the water. First you deploy your kite on a designated rod and there are release clips on the kite line that you attach another rod with a live bait and send it out, you are able to fish up to 3 live baits on 1 kite. It is not as complicated as it sounds but definitely a cool way to fish. Also on the inshore side of things with this heavy wind we have been having there has been some nice sized mahi scattered between 60 feet of water on out to 300 feet. Moving a little bit deeper this week we have a full moon so wahoo would be the target species and there should be a few around on this moon, trolling or live baiting in deeper water from 180 foot on out to about 350 foot is going to be the sweet spot and early mornings seems to always be best for wahoo. Last but not least we have been seeing a few blackfin tuna this week on the deeper side of things, Although a little early in the season for tuna its nice to see them now and the bite should only continue to improve as we reach the winter months.
