Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is the best time of year for big game fishing in Fort Lauderdale. Anglers come from all around the world in February through May for our world class shark fishing action. This is the start of the big shark migration down the Florida coastline. Hammerheads, makos, threshers, bulls, dusky and more shark species migrate down the Gulfstream current on their trek northwards. We catch them about a mile and half offshore, right on the inside edge of the Gulfstream current. The sharks are just starting their migration so we're just getting into the first batch of them now, but for the next 3-4 months, the shark fishing is off-the-scale. Hammerheads are one of the most sought after sharks out here in Fort Lauderdale and they can reach 200-400 pounds and anywhere from 6-12 feet long. If you battle a hammerhead shark for an hour and half in our fighting chair, you understand why they call it sportfishing.

February is also a great month for sailfish action. With the cooler weather, we get some big numbers of sailfish moving through. They are all 6-8 feet in length and they too put up and awesome battle. Sailfish begin jumping immediately upon hookup and they jump throughout the fight, putting on a spectacular aerial display. Sailfish are mainly a surface feeding gamefish and they bite best using the kite fishing technique or by trolling. November through February is the best overall time of they year to after sailfish, so this is the last good month for sailfishing. Sailfish can be caught throughout the year, but they are here in the most concentrated numbers in the cooler weather months. Lots of other fish are biting now too, including mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, barracuda, amberjack, cobia and more, but the really, really big game fish, sharks and sailfish are our specialty. If you're interested in a big game sportfishing charter, call us and book a sailfish or shark fishing charter.
