We reached 80 degrees four times this week and the fish responded well to it. Redfish, Pompano, Spotted Seatrout, and Spanish Mackeral provided us with constant action in Pine Island Sound. We are still tossing shrimp and artificial baits, but I would expect bait to show up in large number later this upcoming week.
This weather is getting warm and I love it! I actually left my jacket in my truck most of the week and water temperatures peaked at 70 degrees in the bay. We had a full week of great fishing which is directly linked to the warming water temperatures. Customers came from all over the map this week. I fished with customers staying in Pine Island, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Sanibel, and Captiva. Some of them were local and others came from as far as Canada. All of them had one thing in common, they wanted an action packed fishing charter!
Tuesday and Wednesday I fished with a good customer from Missouri. We departed from the Punta Rassa boat ramp both days as he was staying near Captiva. We spent most of our time trout fishing and trout catching is what we did. We boated a ton of beautiful big spring trout as well as Spanish Mackeral, Ladyfish, and Sharks. We used live shrimp under Cajun Thunder Rattling Corks to catch most of our fish. We are scaling down our leader to 15-20lb test due to the gin clear water in northern Pine Island Sound.
Thursday I had doubles out of Pineland. My morning trip was with a group of guys from a local country club in Fort Myers. I fished them last year around this time and we had a great time catching big snook. This year with everything being behind schedule, we decided to skip the snook and target redfish and trout. We started out the morning redfishing and caught a couple nice redfish, however we lost multiple fish due to hook setting errors caused by a stiff southeast breeze. We switched over to trout fishing halfway through the morning and it was spectacular. We boated countless trout and most of them were between 18-24 inches. Also mixed in were Spanish Mackeral, Pompano, and Ladyfish. My afternoon trip was with a group from Canada. Their first fish of the day was a trophy 26" trout! They had a contest throughout the evening on who would catch the most fish and the final tally was 29-28. It was a barn-burner decided by a small trout on the last cast of the day. We had a lot of fun catching Trout, Spanish Mackeral, and Pompano.
Saturday I fished with a good customer of mine and his family visiting from up North. They brought along their son and daughter, ages 6 and 8, for some rod bending fun. We caught fish all morning long. It was 4 hours of constant trout, pompano, mackeral, and redfish action. We caught lots of nice quality redfish to 8 pounds. I bet we boated a total of 60 quality fish over the course of the morning.
In summary, the weather is great and the fishing is improving. I have several large school of redfish and snook located and when the bait shows up, it is game on! Little birdies are telling me of reports of bait showing up so get ready for some exciting reports over the next couple months!
Tight Lines!
